Every modern home should have a good lawn. One of the most important necessities of the lawn is water. The quantity of water to be used on the lawn is directly related to the weather season and the grass type planted. The Bermuda, St. Augustine and buffalo are most commonly used types of grasses.
These types of grasses require less watering as compared to the Kentucky blue grass which requires frequent watering. The amount of water used on the lawn is also influenced by the type of weather season. The lawn is mostly dry if not watered well because of the high rate of evaporation during the summer season. In short this means that in the summer seasons, one should ensure that the ground is well watered to avoid drying up.
On the other hand during the winter season there is less humidity thus the lawn is able to retain most of the water. In winter the rate of evaporation is relatively low thus less watering of the lawn is required. Another way to ensure the grass grows well is by applying fertilizers on the lawn. Like watering, fertilizing also depends on the weather season and the type of grass planted. The type of grass which is fertilized during the summer season include the Bermuda and the buffalo.
The cold season type of grass like the Kentucky blue grass are better fertilized during the winter cooler seasons. Fertilizers are usually made of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous which are very essential additives and nutrients for the grass. Instead of buying fertilizers, you can also make your own from home by using wood ashes, bone meal and coffee grounds. The other type of fertilizer can be made from Epsom salts, ammonia, mouthwash and beer.
Lawn care also involves regular weeding of the grass. Weeds do not grow well in areas with tall grasses thus it is important to let the grass grow for a height of more than three inches. Weeding can also be done by the use of vinegar which is strong and does not affect the grass in any way. Other than vinegar, you can also use the following methods to get rid of weeds in your lawn; using herbicides to kill the weeds, laying mulch and also pulling the weed out. Pests in the lawn can be eliminated by using pesticides. The common pests found in the lawn are slugs, insects and snails. You can also save a lot of money used for buying pesticides and hiring professionals by simply cleaning the lawn. Mowing is also another effective way of taking care of the lawn because it allows the grass to grow thick.
