There are many people that do not have the idea on how a water softener actually works. The water softener works by allowing hard water that is full of mineral get in while in return, soft and clean water with no aftertaste will come out.
Water softener is very important to help avoid clogged water heaters, scale on pipes, sinks, and other metal, improving the cleaning features of the water, and avoiding spotted appliances and dishes. That is the main reason why there are many people who are curious on how a water softener device actually works. Making sure that a person can easily deal the huge amount of water that is present everyday is one of the benefits if having a water softener unit.
The water softener unit uses a method that is called ion exchange in order to remove the minerals which are dissolved in the hard water, making sure that a cleaner water with no aftertaste is produced. There are a lot of minerals that can be dissolved in hard water and will cause problem and some of those are sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and iron.
There are a lot of small plastic beads or a matrix that can be found on a water softener unit that are called a zeolite. The cover of the zeolite is made up of ions of sodium. The unwanted minerals in the water will swap places with the sodium every time the water will flow through the beads or zeolite. This process will help remove the minerals that are harmful from the water and will replace it with sodium. During a lot of water cleaning process, the sodium ions on the zeolites or the small plastic beads will eventually run out having the need for a regenerating.
Regeneration of the sodium ions on the zeolites or the small plastic beads is important for the actual work of a water softener. You can regenerate back the sodium ions of the zeolite by soaking the small plastic beads in a solution that contains sodium ions. Strong brine made up of common household salt can be a solution used to regenerate the sodium ions on the zeolites or the small plastic beads f the water softener unit. The remaining brine and the residue of minerals will be flushed away once the zeolites or the small plastic beads of the water softener unit will be regenerated. A lot of brine can be produced even from a single water softener unit if there will be a need to regenerate its zeolites or small plastic beads.
But using this method means that the water softener unit will add more salt in the water it will produce. This type of process can cause a problem especially to people under a low sodium diet.
