You can regenerate back the sodium ions of the zeolite by soaking the small plastic beads in a solution that contains sodium ions. Strong brine made up of common household salt can be a solution used to regenerate the sodium ions on the zeolites or the small plastic beads f the water softener unit. The remaining brine and the residue of minerals will be flushed away once the zeolites or the small plastic beads of the water softener unit will be regenerated. A lot of brine can be produced even from a single water softener unit if there will be a need to regenerate its zeolites or small plastic beads.

But using this method means that the water softener unit will add more salt in the water it will produce. This type of process can cause a problem especially to people under a low sodium diet.
